UFOPA
A Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), created in November 2009, is the first federal university located in the heart of the Amazon area in Brasil, city of Santarém, the third biggest city of the state of Pará and known worldwide by its natural beauties, including the exotic and unique encounter of two giant rivers, the Amazon and the Tapajós, both flowing side by side while keeping their original colour of water without any mix (Tapajós is blue and Amazon is kind of brown).
UFOPA was born from two ancient campi, namely Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and Federal Rural University of Amazon (UFRA), both operating in the western region of Pará state. UFOPA also incorporated other campi from both UFPA and UFRA in the following cities: Alenquer, Itaituba, Juruti, Monte Alegre, Óbidos and Oriximiná. In Santarém, UFOPA is currently working in two Campi, located at Caranazal (former UFPA campus) and Salé (former UFRA campus).
UFOPA academic model follows an innovative system which includes flexible curriculum, interdisciplinarity, and graduation in cycles, all of them being part of an integrated and continuous educational system. The academic model foresees a period of 6 cycles, which starts with an interdisciplinary educational center, shared by all students from UFOPA. Such a period is, then, followed by another period, more specific, which is supported by 5 thematic scientific institutes that are focusing their activities on the regional problems.
